San Jose State freshman Joey Allan won the individual title at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, beating two University of Colorado golfers on the fourth playoff hole at Eisenhower Golf Course at the Air Force Academy, Colorado.
SJSU men’s golf placed 10th out of 18 schools overall.
“We got a chance to bring home some hardware,” SJSU head coach John Kennaday said Monday following Allan’s victory.
Allan kept neck-and-neck with Colorado’s Gavin Amella through all three rounds. The two shot 6-under and 7-under par to take second and first, respectively, after Saturday’s first round.
Eisenhower is a par-72 course.
The Buffaloes’ Casey Kosney, tied for eighth after a 1-under-par first round, shot a 7-under 65 in Round Two to move into second place at 8-under 136, sandwiched by Allan (10-under) and Amella (6-under).
Allan, Kosney and Amella then went 1-under, 3-under, and 5-under to finish the third round in a three-way tie for first. They shot 11-under 205, tying the individual tournament record.
Allan ultimately beat out Kosney and Amella on the fourth playoff hole.
In the team competition, SJSU finished 10th at 2-over 866. First-place Colorado finished 32 strokes ahead at 834.
The Spartans, who tied for 11th with Gonzaga in Round Two, went 2-under 288 in the final round, securing the lone tenth-place finish.
The team was led by freshman Grant Leary and senior Keshav “KC” Mungali, hitting 5 birdies. Junior Dominic Lucchesi also recorded 5 birdies.
“We gained some traction,” Kennaday said, before thanking Spartan Nation. “We got a lot of work to do, but we’re looking forward to it.”
The Spartans will compete in the Clerico on Oct. 19-20 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
