San Jose State officially announces senior quarterback Luke Weaver as its Week 0 starting quarterback against the University of Southern California after an offseason of competition.

Weaver transferred from the University of Hawaii, where he made two starts and five appearances, throwing for 628 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Most notably throwing the game-winning touchdown in the 2025 Hawaii Bowl.

Before Weaver’s time at Hawaii, he played at Modesto Junior College, where he started two seasons, leading the Pirates to back-to-back Valley Conference titles while throwing for 5,332 yards and 44 touchdowns.

SJSU head coach Ken Niumatalolo described Weaver as a player who processes things quickly,  is sneaky athletic, and can extend drives with his legs.

“He threw for a ton of yards in junior college, it was pretty impressive that the two games he started at Hawaii he won. I saw him in the bowl game coming off the bench to throw a game-winner, and that’s hard to do … he’s got a little moxie to him,” Niumatalolo said.

Weaver competed with redshirt freshman Robert McDaniel and freshman Daniel Rolovich and the Spartans’ coaching staff eventually opted for the extended collegiate experience.

“I felt confident that any of these guys could be the starter about a week ago,” SJSU offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann said. “But Luke, he showed it early in fall camp just his command, his presence and being able to move the ball against the defense in scrimmage settings.”

SJSU’s spread-and-shred offense under Stutzmann has been home to a top-two Mountain West passing offense in back-to-back seasons.

Weaver will make his first start as a Spartan against No. 14-ranked USC at 12 p.m. on Aug. 29 at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
