San Jose State women’s tennis (8-14, MW 1-10) wrapped up the University of San Diego USTA Tournament on Saturday, with juniors Emma Fantousis and Emilija Pranyte leading the Spartans in doubles play with a dominant 6-3 victory.
Fantousis and Pranyte finished the tournament strong, earning SJSU’s lone doubles win on the final day.
SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka highlighted the pair’s performance as a standout for the Spartans.
“We wrapped up doubles today 2-1, with double standout Emma and Emmy,” Skorupka said.
Junior Soledad Fayos Capilla also secured a singles victory for the Spartans, defeating Brigham Young University’s Angelique van der Walt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Fayos Capilla controlled the match throughout, giving the Spartans another strong result to close the tournament.
The Spartans faced several close matches in the remainder of Saturday’s action.
Fantousis fell to Nevada’s Kaho Oyama in a three-set battle, 6-4, 7-5, 10-4.
Sophomore Camila Celis was defeated by Boise State’s Valentina Vachkova, 6-4, 6-1, while Pranyte dropped her singles match, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Fayos Capilla and Celis fell 6-4, giving SJSU a 2-1 record in doubles play on the day.
“We have a few days’ rest, and then we send a few girls to the Battle of the Bay,” Skorupka said.
With the tournament complete, the Spartans will have several days to prepare for their next competition.
Several players will head to the Battle of the Bay, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 4, at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.
