San Jose State women’s soccer (1-6-2) couldn’t answer back in its 1-0 loss to University of Texas at El Paso (7-1-3) on Sunday at University Field in El Paso, Texas.
Junior forward Valeria Agudelo scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute with an assist from senior defender Ashlyn Neireiter.
“Today’s game created a lot of opportunities, especially in the first half,” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said. “Unfortunate we didn’t get on the board.”
SJSU recorded 2 of 8 shots on target and took 4 corner kicks in the game. Junior forward Indigo Sims and junior defender Charlotte Memoly each took 2 shots.
Junior goalkeeper Paige Fry recorded 5 saves to keep the game at a close score.
“It’s important, every three points matters,” Curvelo said. “I know this was going to be a hard trip for opening weekend in conference play.”
The Spartans lost their first two conference games of the season on their away trip. They now return home and look forward to the upcoming home game.
“One of the biggest things going into this week is we have four training sessions going into our next home match,” Curvelo said. “And it’s just using this opportunity to continue to improve every single day.”
SJSU’s next match will be against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Saturday at Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose, Calif.
