San Jose State softball (12-28, 4-13 MW) fell 6-5 in extra innings away to Utah State (17-26, 5-11 MW) in a neck-and-neck game that saw early scoring and a late finish.
The Spartans opened strong in the first inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead. SJSU built an advantage and quickly took the lead with timely hits and aggressive base running.
Utah State chipped away in the second inning with two runs, then added three more in the third to take a 5-4 lead. The Spartans answered in the fourth inning when senior Ahmiya Noriega delivered an RBI to tie the game at 5-5.
After the fourth inning, the offense slowed down and neither team scored in the fifth, sixth, or seventh innings, sending the game into extra innings tied 5-5.
In the eighth inning, sophomore Faith Kroening broke through with a triple to right-center that put the winning run in scoring position. The Aggies then took advantage and scored the winning run to secure a 6-5 victory.
Despite the loss, the Spartans displayed strong early hitting and were able to bounce back after losing their first lead. However, they were unable to stop Utah State’s late-game push.
The Spartans will be back on the field at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Utah State.
