Sophomore, Emma Fantousis and sophomore, Soledad Capilla, won both their doubles and singles matchups, giving up just three games collectively all afternoon, to help lead San Jose State (2-0, 0-0 MW) to a 7-0 victory over Dominican University (Cal) (0-1, 0-0 Pac West) in its first home game of the season.
Despite having a change around of doubles pairs for this matchup, the Spartans were still able to continue their success from the season opener and take all the points.
All six singles matches were able to be won in straight sets, with minimal games earned by Dominican.
An impressive performance was on display from Fantousis and Capilla, who played brilliantly together and were able to produce a 6-0 victory in front of the home supporters.
“We need to continue the same every match, everybody together, energy good, positive, and just keep fighting every match,” Fantousis said
“I’m really pleased. We played well as a team and took care of business,” Capilla said.

Later in the afternoon, another amazing game came from sophomore Cristina Losada, who played brilliantly in her singles matchup by holding her opponent off all game and winning 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Katarina Brajovic played in a doubles match this week, partnering up with Losada for this game, winning comfortably, 6-1.
Brajovic was rested for singles with freshman Tara Mihaljevic, coming in to play, despite having a slight ankle injury. She won her game 6-3, 6-1.
It was junior Duru Durgun and freshman Camila Celis, whose game was unfinished, with the Spartans being ahead 4-2. This was due to the other two pairs being victorious and the point already secured for the home side.
Although they weren’t able to finish their doubles match, they were both able to win their singles matches.
After falling short on the road to UC Riverdown, Durgun was able to find her first win of the season on home turf, she convincingly defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0.
“We have a smaller and younger team but we have to be the smarter team. If we stay healthy and play smart tennis, we will be fine,” head coach Chad Skorupka said.
Practicing different drills in training is the way that this team can further improve throughout the season.
“Next week is tougher on paper as we get right into the Mountain West season,” Skorupka said.
Looking ahead to their next game in a week, at 1 p.m. Feb 6th, on the road against Pacific (Stockton, Cali).
