Seven colleges competed in the SDSU Tennis Classic, over the weekend. Junior Miyo Kobayashi won her bracket, the “black” draw after 40 singles entrants were separated in five groups. Kobayashi defeated SDSU’s Jenny Moinard in straight sets
The tournament began with doubles matches, in which one of the three Spartans teams advanced. The doubles pairing of freshmen Julie Vereecke and Jacqueline Wagner advanced to the semi-final round after winning a match against two entrants from the University of Texas-El Paso. The pair lost to Loyola Marymount’’s Yesica De Lucas and Camilla Tumosa the next day.
Four Spartans (Vereecke, Wagner, Kobayashi and Clara Mantaux) advanced past the first round in singles. Kobayashi advanced to the finals.
The tournament marked the debut appearance for Wagner. She finished third place in her draw, as Vereecke did in hers.
The Aztecs host the Spartans formally in seasonal conference play on April 21st. Last year SJSU shut out their rival 7-0 at home, so SDSU will surely have revenge in mind.
The tournament precedes a week of collegiate tournament play at the ITA All-American Championships, in which Sybille Gauvain will represent SJSU.
The Spartans compete in the Saint Mary’s College invitational this coming weekend at the Gaels’ campus in Moraga, CA.
