San Jose State baseball (25-26, 12-15 MW) earned a narrow victory over Fresno State (25-26, 16-11 MW) in a 9-7 win on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans took command throughout the game with senior outfielder Alex Fernandes and infielder JC Osorio-Agard leading the Spartans’ offense as each had three RBIs.
Osorio-Agard showed up for the Spartans recording two hits, a run and went 2-for-5.
SJSU got off to a strong start with Fernandes opening up the offense on a triple homer that led to a run and additional runs from junior infielder Rocco Caballero and junior Jake Maroney taking a 3-1 lead in the second inning.
Senior infielder Antonio Nanez and outfielder Neil Jansen each scored a run in the top of the fifth inning from an Osorio-Agard double making the lead, 5-1.
SJSU continued to control the lead by scoring four runs, two each in the top seventh and eighth inning.
Jansen opened the seventh up with a two-run homer later followed by senior infielder Zach Chamizo hitting a single allowing Maroney to earn his second run of the game in the top of the eighth.
The Bulldogs kept a close fight in the bottom of the eighth by scoring four runs, but the Spartans were able to pull away.
Fresno State’s Justin Stransky doubled to left field leading to senior infielder Eddie Saldivar earning a run.
Shortly after, Bulldogs senior outfielder Bobby Blandford tripled to right field that allowed three runs from Fresno State concluding the final result, 9-7.
Blanford was a spark on offense for Fresno State by recording two runs, two hits and four RBIs while going 2-for-5 in the game.
With a close game, the Spartans were able to have the advantage in hits with 14 compared to Fresno State’s 10.
San Jose State will next conclude its regular season hosting a three game series against Nevada starting on May 15 at 6:05 p.m. at Excite Ballpark.
