For the second day in a row, freshman Jacob Mercep scored six goals at the Mountain Pacific Invitational. SJSU’s 13-8 win against No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer (2-8) marks the first time it’s beaten a top 20 team this season.
It took Mercep a period and a half to start scoring against No. 2 University of California, yet it took just. 25 seconds against Pomona-Pitzer to score his first goal first goal.
Sophomore driver Ashley Castle and sophomore 2-Meter Finn Pardon shared the team lead with three assists, while sophomore driver Ben Hauschild led with three steals.
SJSU ended the first with a 4-1 lead and never let up. The game was closest at the end of the second when freshman driver Dylan Eliott scored on a power play, to make it 5-4.
The Spartans outscored Pomona-Pitzer 5-1 in the third and ultimately sealed the game 13-8.
SJSU will face Air Force Sept. 24 at 11:30 a.m. to end the three-day tournament.
