The San Jose State women’s soccer team (5-4-0, 2-0) won its second game this weekend with afternoon win over the Boise State Broncos (6-4-1,1-1).
After a scoreless first half, Jennifer Orozco knocked in the the match’s first goal in the 56th minute after a corner kick resulted in a free ball in front of the net off of SJSU’s Gabriella Hurtado. The goal was the first for Orozco as a Spartan.
Less than two minutes later, another corner kick play resulted in a goal by Dorthe Hoppius, her third of the season. Yaritza Arista sent in a ball from the right-corner flag that landed at the feet of Hoppius who blasted it past the opposing keeper.
Hoppius’ goal would be the game-winner, negating a goal from BSU’s Aubrey Chatterton in the 88th minute.
“We came out really strong today,” Hoppius said. “We had lots of energy and we really wanted to score.”
The Spartans finished with 23 shots compared to just seven for the Broncos. Corner kicks were heavily in favor for SJSU also with an 8-4 margin.
“I’m really happy about our performance after a hard fought game Friday,” said SJSU head coach Lauren Hanson.
The Spartans head coach also commented on Orozco’s performance.
“She was going for the goal, she was going by players… she was trying to get by players and was very dangerous,” Hanson said.
The Spartans’ next game is away in Fort Collins, Colo. at 3:00 p.m. PT, against Colorado State.
