In a back and forth thriller at home, the SJSU men’s water polo was able to pull off the upset against Cal Baptist 13-12.
This upset came after a strong late third quarter push led by junior 2-meter Maro Tiozzo having two goals and assists cutting the lancers four point lead to one ending the quarter 9-10.
“The guys [felt] a lot more confident with their shooting, more confident with their decision [making] with the ball,” head coach Gabor Sarusi.
The beginning of the fourth quarter was all San Jose State coming back and tying and eventually taking its first lead of the match 12-11 after two back to back goals from sophomore utility Mitchell Keightley.
By the end of the 4th quarter, the Spartans put a dagger in the match after junior attacker Erik Duesund put it away bringing the lead 13-11.
Keightley praised the Spartans as a whole with their resilience in order to take the win.
“We kept fighting, taking it play by play and we came out on top” said Keightley
SJSU looks to improve to 14-6 at 12 p.m. Sunday in its last regular season game at home against Air Force before playoffs at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.
