San Jose State softball (22-26, 9-12 MW) lost a tight game on Friday, falling to San Diego State (32-16, 15-6 MW) by a score of 4-3 at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego.

The Spartans were down early, as the Aztecs built a 3-0 lead after the third inning.

SJSU’s offense found its rhythm, scoring one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

The Aztecs regained the lead for the second time, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“Great battle tonight,” SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann said. “The Spartans came out fired (up), they came out battling.”

The Aztecs are currently second in the Mountain West standings, making them a difficult opponent for the Spartans.

Senior center fielder Aubrie Thomas led the Spartans on offense with two RBIs and one hit. Senior catcher Aneesa Almaguer supported her senior teammate offensively, leading the team with two hits.

“They just fought every opportunity to get back into the game, tied the game going into the fifth, just super proud of how they did,” Lohmann said.

The Aztecs also won the hit battle, recording nine hits compared to the Spartans’ six.

SDSU also had more players record a hit, with seven players contributing, compared to SJSU’s five.

The Spartans have now lost the series after dropping the opening game 2-1 to the Aztecs, but they’ll look to avoid the sweep.

The Spartans will advance to the Mountain West Tournament at 6 p.m. on May 7, facing Fresno State at SDSU Softball Stadium.
