In a low scoring game, San Jose State softball (19-24, 6-10 MW) dropped to a 3-2 loss to Santa Clara (28-17, 7-2 WCC) late in the ninth inning on the road on a Wednesday evening.
Despite the loss, junior Shay McDowell led the Spartans in hits going 2-for-3 along with notching two singles, marking it her 11th multi-hit game this season.
It was a back and forth game with SJSU answering first with a run and leadoff double her eighth double of the season from senior center Aneesa Almaguer in the top second.
The Spartans offense went cold afterwards as they earned their next run in the top seventh from sophomore outfielder Haley Reeve.
Junior infielder Ahmiya Noriega doubled to left center, adding an RBI double that was set up from a pinch-hit from Reeve that was crucial in tying the game, 2-2.
Outfielder Hope Alley eventually sealed the game for Santa Clara, doubling down the line for sophomore Rebbeca Rubio to score, resulting in the final score, 3-2.
Both teams notably recorded seven hits while the Broncos led in strikeouts and RBI’s.
Santa Clara had four strikeouts and three RBI’s compared to the Spartans one of each.
The Spartans will next face their Mountain West opponent, Boise State at home at the Spartan Softball Complex in a three-game series starting on Friday up until Saturday.
