Breaking a losing streak, San Jose State softball (19-23, 6-10 MW) won 4-3 in the seventh inning against University of Nevada, Las Vegas (20-23, 3-13 MW) on Saturday.
SJSU had four hits and zero errors compared to UNLVs’ seven hits and three errors.
Senior Aubrie Thomas got the ball rolling for the offense as she had a home run to center field in the second inning.
At the end of the third inning UNLV’s Jesse Farrell scored, tying the game 1-1.
However that changed in the top of the fourth inning as SJSU took the lead, 2-1.
When freshman Kaylani Lim singled to third base it allowed senior Jules Ronquillo to score.
UNLV changed pitchers from junior Amelia Weber to freshman Yanina Sherwood which allowed them to stop the Spartans from any more runs.
In the fifth inning Thomas was able to get a double that got the Spartans in scoring positions.
Thomas advanced to third where she was able to score from an error by the second base on the Rebels, 3-1.
Freshman Taylor Chillingworth reached, when a fielder caught a foul fly ball in foul territory, on another error by the Rebels pitcher.
Freshman Paige Breitstein took advantage and was able to score, having Spartans take the lead, 4-1.
The Rebels Ariana Martinez hit a home run to right field that helped teammate Farrell to score as well, 4-3.
The Spartans switched pitchers to right handed pitcher Mia Reynolds in the seventh.
The Spartans defense stayed strong, not allowing the Rebels to have an opportunity to score, ending the game.
SJSU softball is scheduled to play Santa Clara University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
