On Monday, San Jose State baseball (15-9) snapped their five-game winning streak against No. 20 Stanford (16-6) 5-1 at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

The Spartans were down 5-0 after the Cardinals scored a run in the first and third innings, putting the game away with three runs in the seventh.

SJSU got on the board in the top of the eighth inning after a hit by Redshirt senior outfielder Jeriah Lewis, bringing home senior infielder Zach Chamizo for the Spartan’s only run.

Chamizo led the Spartans on offense as he led the team in hits with two.

“We had some opportunities, it was 2-0 in the seventh inning,” head coach Brad Sanfilippo said.

SJSU’s offense kept up with Stanford’s intensity, recording six hits, just one less than the Cardinals.

“We just really didn’t cash in offensively,” Sanfilippo said. “On the mound, I think we walked too many guys.”

The Spartans allowed six total walks, while the Cardinals allowed just one.

Despite the walks, the Spartan’s defense played cleanly, allowing just one error on the day.

“We were competitive, I thought we pitched pretty well,” Sanfilippo said. “We kept them off balance for most of the day.”

The Spartans showed their resiliency, as this was the first time this season that the Spartans faced off against a ranked team.
