SJSU Women’s Tennis beats Boise State

Continuing a winning streak of seven games, San Jose State Women’s Tennis (11-1, 2-0 MW) beat Boise State (10-3, 1-1 MW) 4-2 on Sunday.

The Spartans took the double points and three single matches against the Broncos. 

“This was a mental match, dictated on how mentally tough they were and they did that today.” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said.

Spartans were able to finish first with double partners senior Olaya Bances and sophomore Duru Durgun, 6-3. 

Doubles partners sophomore Cheuk Ying Shek and senior Carla Urchoeguia won their match 6-4 which earned the doubles points for the Spartans. Match three was unfinished in the second set with double partners freshmans Soledad Fayos and Emma Fantousis

In the singles matches Fayos finished first by 6-2, 6-1, against opponent sophomore Ella Piron.

Bances with a comeback against Utah State won her singles match, 6-2, 6-1, while Ying Shek fell short in her singles matches, 6-4, 6-3. 

“Staying concentrated, not looking at the other scores and making sure to focus on my court,” Bances said on what her mindset was during her matches.

Fantousis came close to winning her singles matches but fell short, 6-4, 5-7. 

Urchoeguia secured her match for the Spartans in singles after a tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). 

“It was a great battle and it was intense. I was really happy to manage to pull it out in the end, ” Urchoeguia said.

This left Durgun with an unfinished match in the third set. 

SJSU is scheduled to go against the University of Wyoming at noon on Friday.
