San Jose State softball (6-7) suffered its second loss of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, losing to No. 15 Nebraska (10-4) 4-12.

Nebraska had a lot to play for coming into the game. The Cornhuskers were coming off back-to-back losses for the second time this season.

The stakes were high for the Spartans, as this was their first game against a ranked opponent this season.

It started as a defensive show, as both teams went scoreless at the end of the second inning.

The third inning was all the Cornhuskers, as they scored nine runs, leaving the Spartans down 9-0 early.

The Spartans still had life, as they could bounce back on the offensive side in the 4th and 5th innings, outscoring the Cornhuskers 3-2 in the fourth and 1-0 in the fifth.

The Spartans had six total hits, while the Cornhuskers had 14.

Spartans utility junior Shay McDowell led the offense, recording two hits and one run.

Spartans sophomore outfielder Haley Reeve also recorded two RBIs, leading the Spartans.

The Spartans will play their second game of a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7:30.

The Spartans now look to split the doubleheader, just like yesterday after beating Howard and losing to CSUN.

San Jose will wrap up the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday at 11 a.m. versus UC Santa Barbara.
