“Overall, the team had a goal to come in here and make a big statement, and I think they were very successful with that,” SJSU head coach Beth Harberts said in a video posted to X.
The Spartans outscored the Red Foxes in every quarter except the last one, finishing with a final score of 11-8.
Sophomore Rose Jensen led the charge for the Spartans with three goals, while both sophomore Emma Ruzic and freshman Nynke Willemsen put up two-goal games.
Harbets also noted the team’s defense across the tournament being key to their four wins.
At halftime, the score was 7-3 in favor of the Spartans and the game looked mostly out of hand.
The game would ultimately end with Marist only outshooting SJSU by one point in the second half with a 5-4 scoring advantage.
Another key to the Spartans’ victory was senior goalie Grace Smith who recorded 11 saves and a 57.9 % save percentage.
The Spartans will look to improve upon their current 6-game win streak when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the CSUMB Aquatic Center.
