San Jose State women’s water polo (5-6) fell against No. 4 California (7-0) in their first contest but dominated UC Merced (1-8) in their second matchup.

The Spartans could not contain the Golden Bears’ offensive power in the first half, going down 8-3.

SJSU’s biggest spark was sophomore driver Darcy Spark, finishing with three goals and three steals.

Cal’s junior attacker Abbi Magee would score three goals in the third quarter and propel the Golden Bears to a 17-6 win.

“Cal is No. 4 in the nation, so we knew that it was going to be a tough game,” SJSU women’s water polo coach Beth Harberts said.

Despite the loss, Harberts was proud of the Spartans’ defensive play.

“I think we had some incredible defensive stops and we’re coming together as a team with our communication,” Harberts said.

SJSU was able to pile up the stat sheet in their 25-7 dominant win against Merced.

A total of 17 Spartans scored a goal against the Bobcats, with freshman two-md Bridget Cranley leading the way with five.

On 41 shots, the Spartans had an effective 61 percent shooting percentage that the Bobcats could not slow down.

SJSU would not let go of the gas pedal in the second half, outscoring Merced 15-2.

“A lot of our new Spartans were able to score some goals,” Harberts said.

Freshman utility player Jessica Ross and freshman driver Sarah Woren both scored three goals in the win.

“That’s always fun for them to see after they’ve been training so hard,” Harberts said.

SJSU will look to continue their winning ways against No. 23 San Diego State at 1:00 pm Sunday in San Jose.
