San Jose State softball loses 7-1 against Utah Valley in a lopsided defeat on the last day of the NorCal Kickoff tournament.
SJSU loaded the bases in the first inning but couldn’t capitalize leaving baserunners stranded after two strikeouts.
This was a common theme of the game. SJSU failed to capitalize on their opportunities and the Utah Valley Wolverines did.
The Wolverines took advantage of the first inning with a double by infielder Megan Gibbs, followed by a two run RBI by first baseman Emma Haygood.
Utah Valley scored again in the second with a double by catcher Rachel Brown, followed by an SJSU error that led to another score.
SJSU struggled to get anything going offensively, leaving a runner stranded in the second and failing to capitalize on Gigi Ortega’s walk and a stolen base in the fourth.
SJSU’s lone run came in the fifth inning when Utah Valley walked Reina Zermeno and Shay McDowell hit a two run RBI. SJSU was down 3-1.
Utah Valley added to their lead in the sixth inning with a two run RBI double by Avery Sapp, a fielding error, and a couple of walks, which pushed the score to 7-1.
San Jose State softball loses 0-8 in a crushing defeat to Sacramento State.
SJSU was unable to respond, and Utah Valley won 7-1.
The Spartan’s bats went silent in their second game of a doubleheader.
The game was pretty balanced for both teams during the first couple of innings, but there was a key difference: the Sacramento State Hornets were getting people on base and SJSU was struggling to.
The game began to break open in the third inning when catcher Katie Marsh scored an RBI to left-center. The Hornets were up 1-0.
The Hornets followed up on their good third inning with two runs in the fourth, including an RBI by Caroline Evans.
SJSU also gave up two errors in this inning, which led to scores.
SJSU hitters could only obtain one hit compared to the five hits they gave up.
The fifth inning was a tremendous offensive effort to close the game for the Hornets as they scored five runs on three hits and capitalized on a few defensive errors by the SJSU defense.
Despite the rough losses today, SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann said the team will play better.
“We’re going to get back to work this week in every aspect of our game,” Lohmann said. “We’re going to get better and come out and be stronger next weekend.”
