On the first day of the invitational, senior Emilia Sjostrand finished first in the women’s long jump as she set a school record with a jump of 6.59 (21-7 ½).
Sjostrand also broke the SJSU all-time indoor record for Women’s Long Jump which she set at last year’s Mountain West championships.
Sophomore Katharina Graman finished third in the long jump with a score of 6.01 (19-8 ¾) and graduate student Simone Johnson rounded out the top five with a score of 5.96 (19-6 ¾).
“Our top people are starting to show real consistency in their events and it’s going to pay off in a big way,” director of track and field and cross country Charles Ryan said.
Freshman Myles McFarland made his season debut in the 60m dash and finished fourth in his heat with a time of 7.16.
McFarland also competed in 60m hurdles and ran his personal best of 8.16 to finish fifth in his heat and 17th overall.
On the second day of the Stan Scott Invitational, Simone Johnson won the women’s triple jump event with a season-best mark of 13.43m (44-0 ¾). That mark put her sixth in the nation on the indoor championship qualifying list.
Three more Spartans finished in the top five of the triple jump with Katharina Graman finishing in third place.
As a team, the women’s triple jump ranks fourth in the national event squad rankings.
“Overall, I thought the meet went very well, I was excited to see the spirit of competition in the majority of the team,” Ryan said.
Senior Lina Schubert finished fifth in the women’s high jump with a season-best of 1.75m (5-8 ¾ ).
Freshman Deshawn Banks also finished with a season-best in the men’s high jump with a mark of 2.12m (6-11 ½).
The Spartans will look to improve upon their performances when they compete in the Don Kirby Invite on Feb. 14-15 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
