San Jose State women’s water polo (3-5) made its home debut this season on Saturday, defeating California State Monterey Bay (1-5) 22-9.

The Spartans got a strong start, ending the first quarter with a 7-2 lead.

“We really try to promote having those process goals and what we’re trying to individually work on so that we have a good focus as we hit the water,” SJSU women’s water polo coach Beth Harberts said.

The Otters had no answer for the Spartan’s sophomore utility player, Emma Ruzic, who led the game with five goals.

“We just all wanted the win and took it, just trying to get everyone fired up, and that was my main priority,” Ruzic said.

SJSU piled up the stat sheet, putting up eight steals and 13 blocks.

“I think the triple block that I had was pretty cool,” Spartans junior goalkeeper Tatianna Raffin said. She had 12 of the 13 SJSU  total blocks.

. “I think we did well on our six-on-five, and our communication is getting better,” Raffin said.

The Spartans are scheduled to face off against the Otters again on February 23.

SJSU has won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The team looks to win its third straight match against Santa Clara University at 11:00 am Sunday in San Jose.
