It’s been 16 years since the San Jose State women’s volleyball team last took on the Santa Clara University Broncos. The last time the teams faced off, SCU (7-5) walked away after defeating SJSU 3-1. Last night, the Spartans (8-3) took the victory in the same fashion, winning 3-1 as well.
The Broncos came running out the gates in the first set, taking the victory 25-21. It was this win that would be the only one SCU would see for the night.
Santa Clara entered the Spartan Gym with a four–game winning streak, something that was demolished with the might of the Spartans.
“Today, we were able to adjust really well to the opponents,” said outside hitter Fernanda Vido. “ They couldn’t score a lot against us and I’m really proud.”
The Spartans came back determined in the second, ending with a 25-17 win, leaving the Broncos in the dust.
SJSU held onto the momentum in the third set as it overpowered SCU with another 25-17 win.
“I think our game planned surprised them today,” said head coach Jolene Shepardson. “More than that, we were able to execute it well.”
Radiating off the court tonight was the Spartans’ energy that carried out to the crowd with each win.
“We were definitely a lot more energetic tonight,” Vido said. “It allowed us to take the win.”
The electricity sparked for the third and final time of the night in the fourth set when the Spartans came out in top once again 25-23.
Vido led the team in kills tonight with 18 out of the Spartans’ 61. It was libero Luiza Andrade that took the lead in digs with 24 out of the 62 for the night.
SJSU is headed to Reno on Tuesday to face the Nevada Wolfpack at 6:30 p.m.
