After winning the Adams Cup last year, the San Jose State men’s hockey team carried the momentum into this fall with a season-opening win over UC Berkeley 8-5.
At the end of the first period, the Spartans found themselves trailing slightly. Senior defenseman Jon Rivard and senior forward Jared Anstett both scored in the opening frame, yet SJSU found itself down 3-2.
The Spartans tied it up early in the second period, however, with a couple back-and-forth goals between both teams, they went into the locker room with a 5-4 lead.
After allowing four goals on 17 shots, senior goalie Edward Berlin was pulled at the end of the second period and replaced by freshman Evan Sutherland who would get credit for the win.
Twenty-eight seconds into the third, junior forward Corey Semmelmayer gave the Spartans a two-goal cushion making it 6-4. Thirty seconds later, Berkeley junior forward Michael Leone scored for Berkeley making it a one-goal game.
Shots were even the whole game at 30 for each team but the Spartan goaltending and defense were able to edge out Berkeley toward the game’s end.
The next puck drop for SJSU is this Friday (9/22) at 7:30 p.m. against Boise State.
