San Jose State women’s golf finished fourth place out of 11 teams in the Nanea Invitational held Oct. 28-30 at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Through the first two rounds the Spartans stayed consistent, hitting ten under par as a team. They were tied for third place after the second day of the tournament.
Their stay at the Aloha state didn’t end as planned, hitting +10 in the final round, falling to fourth place.
Senior Lucia Lopez Ortega led the way for SJSU, opening her tournament at -6 in the first round. She was tied for first place during day one.
She finished the final round four over par, dropping eight spots. She placed in a three way tie for 12th place out of 60 golfers.
A similar experience went down for senior Nicola Kaminski, who was sniffing just outside the top ten through the first two rounds. After a four over par performance in the final round dropped her seven spots she finished 18th.
Despite it being a slightly disappointing end to the Spartans’ time in Kona they still had a lot of success, having four players finish in the top 20 as well as finishing above three teams who were ranked higher than them heading into the tournament.
“Feeling good about finishing fourth in a very strong field,” SJSU head coach Dana Dormann said. “The only teams we lost to were all top ten in the country, so we’re going to rebound from this and work really hard this winter to be ready for the spring.”
SJSU concludes their fall season, and will have plenty of time to rest until their next match. They’ll play in the Match in the Desert on Jan. 27 at Gold Canyon, Ariz.
