San Jose State women’s basketball had its first game of the season on Wednesday night defeating Lincoln University 81-37 in an exhibition match at Provident Event Center.
“We did some good things and obviously we did some things we need to go back and work on,” SJSU head coach April Phillips said. “It was just good to get out there again.”
Senior Amiah Simmons had herself a debut with the Spartans scoring a career-high 22 points in the game while playing aggressively and running all over the court to win the ball and score.
The Spartans started off slow in the first quarter only scoring 11 points and shooting 31% from the field and 20% from the three point line with the score tied 11-11.
The Spartans turned the game around in the second quarter with senior Djessira Diawara and redshirt junior Amira Brown opening the score with both players having nine points in the quarter.
SJSU’s defense played hard as they had four blocks and slowed down Lincoln’s Offense to keep them scoreless in the second quarter making the score 36-11 at halftime.
It was all Spartans in the second half of the game.
The Spartans would score 23 points in the third. Simmons led the quarter with 13 points.
SJSU closed it out with a pair of back to back three pointers from senior Hennie Van Schaik and scores from freshmen Mecca Alexander, Stella Sgro, and sophomore Sydni Summers to increase the lead.
Other final stat lines include Brown finishing with 14 points and three assists and Diawara with 13 points and one assist.
SJSU looks to carry the momentum to next week as they will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to play Xavier University in their first regular season game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Cintas Center.
