San Jose State women’s tennis took part in the ITA Northwest Regional over the week in Berkeley, California.
SJSU senior Olaya Iglesias showed out the first day winning both her singles and doubles matches with help from her freshman partner Nahjime Dho.
Dho split her singles matches by defeating UC Davis freshman Polina Marakhtanova and losing to Gonzaga sophomore Rose Hayes.
That didn’t stop the Spartans as they won their other doubles match against Cardinal grad student Chidimma Okpara and her freshman partner Morgan Shaffer thanks to sophomore Cheuk Ying Shek and senior Carla Urchoeguia.
Ying Shek and Urchoeguia kept the streak going, winning their doubles match on day two against Davis.
Unfortunately, SJSU struggled to carry the momentum into their singles play. The only win came from freshman Emma Fantousis, who defeated sophomore Nahreen Cheam from the University of the Pacific.
SJSU managed to turn it around in singles play with Ying Shek, Dho and sophomore Duru Durgun winning their singles matches.
The same can not be said for doubles as Ying Shek and Uchoeguia lost to University of Washington’s senior-junior duo of Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda
Following this tournament, the Spartans plan to play in the SJSU Hidden Duals starting Oct. 25 at the Spartan Tennis Complex in San Jose, Calif.
