San Jose State women’s soccer (0-7-2, 0-1 MW) remains winless on the season as it lost to No. 7 Utah State (10-0-1, 1-0 MW) 4-0 at home Thursday night.
The Spartans continued their trend of not scoring more than one goal in any game this season. There have been four games where the team has lost in a shutout plus a 0-0 tie.
Despite only getting outshot 7-6 at halftime, SJSU trailed 3-0.
“We showed really well on the ball and had it for the most part in the first half,” SJSU head coach Tina Estrada said. “But they got three goals off of a few silly mistakes, so our team just has to continue to stay together.”
The Aggies dominated the game as they outshot the Spartans 22-10.
Junior midfielder Tatiana Cunningham led the Spartans with four shots.
One thing the Spartans can hang their hat on is that they committed six fouls compared to the Aggies’ 17.
Senior forwards Kennedy Mayo and Bella Flocchini each had two shots including one on goal.
Despite the 4-0 loss, both Mayo and Flocchini were encouraged about the team’s performance.
“Apart from the score, I think our team performed extremely well, apart from our past performances and not having a win yet,” Mayo said.
In the end, the Spartans come away winless on the season.
“I thought that we had some really good moments,” Flocchini said. “I thought that we had the ball a lot and they had a couple nice goals on us, but I honestly thought we had a pretty good performance and connected the ball pretty well a lot of the times.”
The Spartans’ 17-game winless streak dates back to last season. Their last win came on Sept. 28, 2023.
“We just have to keep moving forward, staying together, keep fighting and be a little bit more dangerous, finish some chances on Sunday against a pretty good team,” Estrada said in a video posted to the SJSU Athletics website.
SJSU will look to end its winless streak Sunday at home against Boise State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
