San Jose State men’s soccer (1-3-3) tied 0-0 against Saint Mary’s (1-4-3) Friday night and had many opportunities to gain a lead but struggled to finish.

The Spartans had a season-high 18 shots in the game compared to the Gaels’ shots.

“We were making a lot of chances,” SJSU head coach Simon Tobin said. “I thought we dominated the game.”

The Spartans’ best opportunities to take the lead came in the second half with 14 total shots.

In the 66th minute, junior forward Anthony Guzman had a great opportunity to score but his shot was saved at the goal line by St. Mary’s freshman goalkeeper Kolby Fish Sessions.

Junior forward Diogo Baptista had another great chance at a goal for the Spartans in the 69th minute but failed to convert.

Sessions finished the night with eight huge saves that denied SJSU from ever taking the lead in the game.

“I think we had everything except that last finished product, you know, just in front of goal,” Tobin said. “That’s something we can work on in the training ground.”

Despite the goalless draw, Tobin was pleased with the team’s performance on Friday night.

“I’m proud of them. I thought they were superb tonight,” said Tobin.

SJSU remains lossless at home this season with one win and three draws.

The Spartans will have a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to play University of San Francisco at 7 p.m. Monday at Negoesco Stadium.
