Over the weekend San Jose State women’s tennis participated in the third annual intercollegiate championship in San Diego.
SJSU matched up against different players from schools across the West Coast including San Diego State, BYU, Utah, Arizona State and Nevada and put on a decent performance.
Sophomore Cheuk Ying Shek and senior Carla Urchoeguia won their doubles matchup against Nevada juniors Amahée Charrier and Silvia-Maria Costache.
Ying Shek was able to carry this momentum into her singles play defeating No. 2 seed Arizona State sophomore Sara Svetac two straight sets.
SJSU sophomore Duru Durgun also won in singles beating junior Dylan Lolofie from Utah.
Struggling in day two with their only win coming from SJSU senior Olaya Iglesias in singles against BYU freshman Hiba Heni.
SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka called it “a rough day for the Spartans results wise” in a video posted on SJSU Athletics.
Fortunately, SJSU was able to turn it around and redeem themselves on the final day.
Ying Shek and Urchoeguia won their doubles match as well as their individual singles matchups.
Ying Shek defeated San Diego State sophomore Vesa Gjinaj while Urchoeguia defeated senior Zoe Olmos who is also an Aztec.
Despite not being able to win their doubles match, Durgun and Iglesias were able to win their respective singles matches with Iglesias defeating Lolofie and Durgun defeating Emma Valletta, another Utah junior.
Skorupka called it “a very good day” and a “bouce back from a tough day” before in another video posted to SJSU Athletics.
Following this tournament, SJSU gears up as they are scheduled to participate in the Cal Invitational Friday in Berkeley, Calif.
