During a scorching hot Labor Day weekend all across California, the San Jose State women’s soccer team hosted yet another nationally ranked team in the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas.
After an early goal by Meaghan Nally, the Spartans were never able to climb back as the Hoyas scored two more unanswered goals for a final score of 3-0.
Spartans head coach Lauren Hanson had some high praise for her defense, especially that of Myia Wilkes.
“Our back four were fantastic, Maya Wilkes is one of our best defenders, phenomenal composure around the ball,” Hanson said.
Hanson also noted that the team’s midfield and offense needed to focus on rhythm and execution on offensive rushes.
Between the pipes, goalkeeper Paige Simoneau faced just six shots but stopped only half of them.
“All shots were tough to read,” Simoneau said. “Seemed like they were trying to cross them.”
Simoneau also commented on the Spartans overall play, despite the loss.
“Team was amazing today,” Simoneau said. “The heat started getting to us later in the game, but it was a great team effort.”
This being the first game out of five on a long home stand, the players were happy to be home and are looking to turn things around.
“We want to bring the same level of intensity to the rest of the games and not take any team for granted,” said defender Kristen Amarikwa. “We like the challenge of playing top teams like this.”
The Spartans next game is this Friday at 2 p.m. as they host the Cal Poly Mustangs in hopes of cooler weather and the start of a win streak.
