Spartans bounce back with Saturday sweep

Taylor Lupetti (@tayclupetti):

After losing to the UC Riverside Highlanders last night, the Spartans came back and shut out Cal State Fullerton and Howard in a two-match day at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic.

It was a swift victory in the morning for SJSU as it ended the game against the Fullerton Titans in a three set match, defeating Fullerton 3-0.

If that wasn’t enough, the Spartans then came back later in the afternoon to take on and shut out the Howard Bison 3-0.

SJSU had over double their opponents kills in the opening match with 50, more than doubling Fullerton’s 24.  In all three sets, the Spartans never let the Titans’ score hit 20 (25-18, 25-17, 25-14).

The first two sets against Howard ended 25-21.The Spartans again swept their opponent winning 25-16 in the third set.

Leading the Spartans in kills against Fullerton was middle blocker Nandyala Gama with 16 of SJSU’s 50 kills.  Gama came back and led the team against Howard again with 16 kills.

Robinson finished with 42 assists against Fullerton and then had 36 of the Spartans’ 41 assists against Howard..

The victories complete the Spartans time in Southern California at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic.  The Spartans will be traveling to Iowa next weekend to face the University of Nebraska Omaha at the Drake Invitational Friday at 11 a.m PT.
