Women’s soccer continues after Friday’s cancellation

San Jose State women’s soccer takes on Georgetown today at home to kick off its five-game homestand. The game comes after Friday’s match against Rice was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

“Our thoughts are with the people in Houston and the Rice soccer program during this challenging time,” said SJSU’s head coach Lauren Hansen.

In response to the tragedy, the women’s soccer team along with the football team is selling t-shirts with “Houston Strong” printed on them, with all proceeds going to the city and its flood victims.

Meanwhile, the team is looking to bounce back after a loss last weekend in Montana. The Spartans will hope their home field advantage to will boost morale as well as their total in the win column.

The Georgetown Hoyas (3-1-0) have had a dominant season so far while the Spartans (1-3-0) have looked rather shaky. SJSU will need a strong performance to take down this powerful team.

The Spartan may have an edge over  the Hoyas with their star goalkeeper and Mountain West Player of the Week, sophomore Ana Calero. She had six saves and gave  the team its first shutout of 2017 against Eastern Washington.

Another player to keep an eye on is senior forward Dorthe Hoppius. She scored San Jose State’s only goal against Montana on Sunday, giving her 3 points so far this season. Hoppius is also tied for fourth on SJSU’s list for most career goals.

Kickoff is at 12 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
