Spartans take opening set; lose three straight for first loss.

It was a short-lived win streak for the women’s volleyball team as it came up short against the UC Riverside Highlanders 4-1 Friday evening.

The Spartans took the lead by winning the first set 25-16. UCR was never within six points during the set.

After starting the second set tied 11-11, the Spartans gave up three points in a row, giving the Highlanders a lead they would never give up. The match was deadlocked at 1-1.

SJSU closed in on the UCR in the third set,getting as close as 22-22 but gave up the last three points the Highlanders needed, costing them the third set 25-22.

THe Highlanders would go on to win the fourth set rallying late. At one point, the Spartans held an 18-15 lead.

Middle blocker Nandyala Gama and outside hitter Fernanda Vido led SJSU in kills and assists, both earned double-doubles of the night.  Gama with 15 kills-33 assists and Vido with 18 kills-59 assists.

The Highlanders (4-1) win against the Spartans (2-1) has now tied their best start in their Division 1 history.

The Spartans are headed to Fullerton today where they will play Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. and Howard at 2 p.m.
