Two of the biggest bright spots from San Jose States season entered the transfer portal and they have now found new homes.

Junior guard Alvaro Cardenas has announced he is committing to Mountain West rival school Boise State for his final year of eligibility.

Cardenas has been the rock for San Jose State’s offense and was the team captain for San Jose State’s historic 21-win season in the 2022-2023 season.

Cardenas had to step up and take a bigger role in the SJSU offense and he excelled putting up a career high 13.1 ppg while shooting 45.7% from the field this season.

The Spartans will miss his ability to distribute the basketball as Cardenas averaged a career-high 5.7 assists per game last season which ranked number 30 across the NCAA. Cardenas also sported a 2.7 assist to turnover ratio which was ranked number 40 across the NCAA.

Another big loss came when Junior guard Myron Amey Jr., who just came off a breakout season hit the portal.

Amey Jr. has announced his commitment to Loyola Marymount University (LMU) via his Instagram.

Amey Jr. led the team averaging 15.7 points per game and was named an All-Mountain West Honorable Mention this past season.

After coming back from dealing with an ankle injury during the 2022-2023 season and came back with the best season of his collegiate career.

With the loss of Cardenas and Amey Jr., SJSU now finds itself without it’s top two scorers from the previous season. With senior forward Trey Anderson graduating and senior forward Tibet Goerner also hitting the transfer portal, the Spartans now find themselves without four of their starters from the 2023-2024 season.

With the big names leaving SJSU men’s basketball it will be an almost entirely new look starting lineup come winter.
