On Tuesday night, the San Jose State women’s basketball team (7-23, 2-16 MW) took a 82-65 road loss to Nevada (16-15, 10-8 MW) in the team’s final game of the regular season.
The Spartans started off strong in the first quarter taking a 19-17 lead with early 3-point shots from their guards freshman Sydni Summers and sophomore Sabrina Ma.
SJSU shot 70% in the first quarter and had great defensive rebounds throughout the game with 18 rebounds
The team started to struggle in the second quarter giving up 25 points and finding themselves down by nine points heading into halftime.
“We did some really good things in the first quarter and then went away from some of those things,” SJSU head coach April Phillips said. “Nevada picked the pressure on us a little bit and then we just got out of doing some things that led us to some early success.”
The Spartan’s offensive struggles continued all through the second half only scoring 11 points in the third and 20 in the fourth.
The Spartans had a lot of missed shots and did not capitalize on the opportunities they had.
Sophomore guard/forward Sofia Kelemeni would lead SJSU with 19 points followed by Ma’s 14 points and Summers with 12 points.
The Spartans had over 20 turnovers and missed shots in the second half.
The Wolf Pack capitalized on the Spartans’ mistakes by scoring 38 points in the second half and walking away with the victory.
Nevada seniors Lexie Givens and Victoria Davis both scored 15 points and sophomore Kenedy Lee had 14 points.
SJSU will look forward to upset teams ahead of them as they did in last year’s tournament. They upset Air Force in the first round and look ahead to do the same and go beyond in the tournament.
The Spartans will look ahead as they are scheduled to take on the seventh-seed San Diego State in the Mountain West tournament at 4:30 p.m. on March 10 in the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
