San Jose State (5-1) defeated CSU Northridge (3-1) 4-1 showing that it’s still the team to beat despite its loss to CSU Fullerton Friday.
The Spartans have their singles matches to thank given that they won almost all of them.
Doubles was a different story. The Matadors won both doubles matches, securing the doubles point.
CSUN grad student Sasha Turchak and junior Yuliia Zhytelna were a dynamic duo beating senior Irena Muradyan and freshman Cheuk Ying Shek 6-1. This loss snapped the duo’s undefeated doubles play record.
Senior Victoria Santibañez Luna and junior Cindy Ung defeated seniors Carolina Millan and Jovana Babic 6-4.
The Spartans did not let the doubles loss discourage them, winning four straight singles matches.
Babic defeated junior Nicole West 6-1 in both matches followed by Millan winning her matches against Turchak.
Muradyan answered back from the doubles loss by defeating Zhytelna in both singles matches.
Ying Shek went up against Luna winning her match and sealing the win for the Spartans.
“Great performances today in singles,” SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka said in a video posted to SJSU Athletics. “It was a different story for doubles, but we will work on that at practice.”
This win puts San Jose State in second in the Mountain West behind the undefeated New Mexico who have won eight straight.
SJSU will end its four-game road trip with the University of San Francisco this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. determined to kickstart a winning streak.
