San Jose State softball had a huge weekend hosting the Silicon Valley Classic I tournament.

Despite weather delays and scheduling changes, the Spartans swept all four games of the tournament and have won five straight.

Saturday’s game against Fordham got delayed due to rain, but the Spartans came out on top 5-4.

“What an incredible day for the Spartans,” SJSU head coach Tammy Lohmann said. “The team fought through the elements today with the rain and delays.”

All of the Spartans’ runs came in the fourth inning.

Ahmiya Noriega had a big game, going 2-for-3 with a 2-run RBI triple.

Shay McDowell and Carly Cummings both hit RBI singles. Makayla Freshour hit her first RBI double.

On the mound, Lacie Ham started and had five strikeouts through 3.2 innings. Ava Conti earned her first career win and Alexis Toner closed the game out to earn her first career save.

The team was scheduled to have a doubleheader Saturday, but the second game against Portland State got pushed to Sunday morning.

The Spartans won 9-7 in an offensive battle.

Reina Zermeno started strong with a 3-run homer in the third inning.

“[Zermeno] was just on fire,” Lohmann said. “That girl is just a gamer, she just finds a way to get it done.”

Although Portland State caught up by scoring six runs in the fifth inning, McDowell hit a huge 2-run RBI single in the sixth inning that secured the lead.

Aubrie Thomas also had a big game, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Mia Reynolds started the game, giving up five runs and eight hits through 4.1 innings. Toner and Ham came in for relief. Ham earned her third win of the season.

The team was originally set to play Cal Poly on Sunday, but the game got postponed to a later date because of the delays.

Up next, SJSU softball will travel to Fullerton, Calif. for the Judi Garman Classic on March 1-3.
