SJSU women’s basketball (5-7) dug itself into a hole in the first half trailing 38-17 against St. Mary’s (7-7) and were never able to get out of it. The Spartans would outscore St. Mary’s 35-32 in the second half but, it was too little, too late.

“It was definitely a tale of two halves,” head coach April Phillips said. “The way we showed up that first half needs some fixing.”

Freshmen guards Sydni Summers and Jyah LoVett have shown promise on the season but tonight was an example of some growing pains for the two. LoVett and Summers would combine for 14 of the Spartans 22 turnovers.

LoVett was the top scorer on the game for the Spartans, scoring 15 points with five assists, four rebounds and five steals. However, she also lead the team with eight turnovers.

Summers had an uncharacteristic performance shooting 0-6 on the game and having six turnovers.

Junior forward Amhyia Moreland was another top scorer for the Spartans scoring 13 points shooting 6-11 from the field.

San Jose State also struggled from beyond the arc as a team shooting 3-22 from deep collectively.

The Spartans are still without junior forward Marisa Davis-Jones who has not played the last two games, one of the Spartans leading scorers in the 22-23 season averaging 10.8 points per game. Davis-Jones has only played in five games this season and the Spartans hope to have her back for the late season stretch.

The Spartans are 1-3 in their last four games, and they hope to turn the ship around as they head into conference play. They will be home to start off conference play on Jan. 3 versus Fresno State at 7 p.m.
