The San Jose State University men’s soccer team showcased their dominance in a 3-0 victory against Utah Tech.
The action began with SJSU freshman forward Angel Fernandez striking the back of the net in the 25th minute, with an assist by sophomore midfielder Gaku Nishimura.
This high-left shot marked the game’s first goal. This set the tone for the Spartans for the rest of the match.
Nishimura added a second goal for the Spartans at the 32nd minute mark with an assist by graduate forward Jamal Adam.
Despite Utah Tech’s persistent efforts with multiple shots on goal, the Trailblazers couldn’t find the back of the net.
SJSU fifth-year goalkeeper David Sweeney made vital saves. Freshman defender Miguel Regino and junior defender Gavin Coe also had impressive stops.
Junior midfielder Mario Barocio scored a late goal with an assist by sophomore midfielder Angel Iniguez, cementing the team’s 3-0 win.
Throughout the match, Utah Tech made several substitutions.
Early on, junior midfielder Bryce Backlund was replaced by sophomore midfielder Jerod Allen, hoping to inject some pace into the midfield.
Later in the game, Utah Tech substituted junior midfielder Damian Arguello for sophomore forward Ethan Bell to solidify its defense.
However, the substitutions didn’t translate into goals against a strong SJSU defense.
For SJSU, this win is a testament to its attacking prowess and solid defense. Fernandez’s swift opening strike showed SJSU’s offensive ability. Sweeney made several vital saves, denying Utah Tech of a comeback.
San Jose State will look to continue its winning streak in its next match at the Spartan Soccer Complex against California Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m.
