SJSU women’s soccer (2-3-5, 0-0-2 MW) tied at home against San Diego State University (6-2-2, 1-0-1 MW) in a 2-2 draw.

SJSU started off strong in the first half as it was able to capitalize on a header inside the box by junior midfielder Taylor Phillips scoring her fourth goal of the season, which put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 12th minute.

SDSU would bounce back in the second half as junior midfielder Denise Castro scored her fifth goal of the season in the 53rd minute, after a shot up and into the goal.

SJSU would answer back quickly after a foul in the box that would set up Sabrina Weinman to score a penalty kick in the 58th minute, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1 in the second half.

Late in the second half, the Aztecs would answer in the 74th minute, after a close-range goal from redshirt junior Emma Gaines-Ramos to tie the match at 2-2. Despite giving up two goals in the second half the Spartans were able to come away with a tie.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bente Pernot was a huge factor in the Spartans coming away with the point as she had nine saves in the game. This tied her second-most saves in a game this season.

“We had two hard teams this weekend … and we’re undefeated so I’m happy about that,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada. “Happy that our team was able to find a way to get some goals and come back from behind at times.”

The Spartans came into today’s match against the Aztecs with two wins in their all-time head-to-head matchups.

SDSU outshot the SJSU 21-11, but the Spartans were more efficient as they had the more accurate shots in the match and had 8 of their 11 shots on goal.

SJSU women’s soccer will travel to Las Vegas as it will take on the UNLV Rebels on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
