The SJSU softball team defeated the Colorado State Rams by a score of 5-4.
The series against the Rams (18-12, 4-5 MW) started off with a much needed victory after the Spartans (16-20, 4-6 MW) lost the five previous games, three of those games against San Diego State for an unfortunate series sweep.
Redshirt senior infielder Alyssa Graham hit a homer in the bottom of the first, leading the team now with seven home runs for the season.
An additional run was scored by redshirt senior infielder Adrianna Noriega in the first inning as well.
Junior utility player Ashley Rico also was able to acquire two runs in the third and fifth inning to help SJSU gain the lead after it was temporarily down 3-2.
Redshirt senior pitcher/outfielder Jenessa Ullegue also hit a homer while also acquiring her third RBI of the night in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Spartans up 5-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Rams had a chance to win the game as the bases loaded for Colorado State, but sophomore pitcher Ashley Goard had a different idea when she went for the strikeout to get the victory for San Jose.
The Spartans finished up with five runs, six hits and two errors while the Rams got four runs, one more hit than San Jose with seven and only one error for the night.
Head coach Tammy Lonmann kept the message short and simple on keeping the momentum going into tomorrow’s game against Colorado again.
“We got to score more runs,” Lohmann said. “Take this energy from this win tonight and just come out and compete tomorrow.”
The SJSU softball team will play against the Rams on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m. here in San Jose.
