SJSU softball (15-17, 3-3 MW) suffered an 8-6 loss at New Mexico (15-18, 3-3 MW), losing the series 2-1.
Firstly, it appeared the Spartans would win the game, but the Lobos had other plans.
After a base hit by junior outfielder Ashley Rico, redshirt junior infielder Adrianna Noriega and redshirt senior pitcher Jenessa Ullegue hit home runs to give San Jose State an early 3-0 lead.
The action continued into the second inning, starting with redshirt junior infielder Karizma Bergesen getting hit by a pitch.
Redshirt senior infielder Jessica Giacoma made the Lobos pay, hitting an RBI double to score Bergesen.
Indeed, everything was going right with SJSU as they held a 4-0 lead.
With Giacoma on base, freshman utility player Reina Zermeno got in on the action, hitting the Spartans’ third home run to put them ahead 6-0.
Unfortunately, New Mexico woke up in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs of their own, with Lobos junior outfielder Maddie Boldt‘s smacking a 2-run homer.
Despite the Spartans still having the lead, the Lobos continued by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
They now had a 7-6 lead over San Jose State. The Lobos went to score one more run in the sixth before they called it a night.
The Spartans saw a small window of hope in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
After coming into the series winning six out of seven, SJSU finish this series on the losing end.
SJSU heads to San Diego State for a three-game series starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.
