San Jose State (13-21-1) once again showed its inability to play a full 9 innings on the road, losing 11-6 to Saint Mary’s (23-13) after holding a 5-0 lead through three and a half innings.
The Spartans recorded 9 hits but it’s clear the team needs even more from their bats.
Things looked good to start for the Spartans as the combination of Matt Brown and Zach Wallace tossed 3⅔ no-hit innings while the offense put up 2 runs in the second to take an early lead. They added two more in the 4th and one in their half of the 6th, at that point holding a 6-2 lead.
SMC began to string hits together and crossed the plate twice in the 6th and once in the 7th inning before erupting for 6 runs in the bottom in the 8th.
It took three pitchers for SJSU to get out of the disastrous inning, and a total of nine pitchers in the 5-run loss.
Austin Chauvin lead the way for the Gaels knocking in 3 RBIs while Zach Kirtley and Edward Haus each had 2.
Freshman Anders Davidson started and drove in two runs while fellow freshman Johnny Mendoza recorded 2 RBI’s as a designated hitter. Sophomore Aaron Pleschner and senior Jack Veasey had the others for the Spartans.
While there is still a little more than a month remaining in the season, SJSU’s season has unquestionably taken a turn.
The Spartans have now lost 12 of their last 17 and with Air Force coming to town this weekend, it will be crucial for SJSU to get back on track as the Spartans haven’t won multiple games of a series since playing Nevada in mid-March.
With Brown getting the call today, Thursday’s starter remains relatively unpredictable. What we do know is that first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
