SJSU softball (6-8, 0-0 MW) battled the UCSB Gauchos (7-5, 0-0 BW) Sunday morning in San Jose.

The Spartans lost to the Gauchos 9-4 to cap off the SVC Classic I

The Spartans fell behind early. Jenessa Ullegue (4-3) gave up three runs in the top of the first inning.

For UCSB, senior first baseman Korie Thomas tripled to right center field to push across two runs. SJSU trailed 3-0 in the top of the first inning.

The Spartans quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning.

Redshirt senior third baseman Alyssa Graham crushed her fourth home run of the season, hitting a tank over the left field wall.

Soon after, redshirt junior center fielder Adrianna Noriega hit a RBI triple off the right field wall to score junior outfielder Ashley Rico. The Spartans trailed 3-2 at the end of the first inning.

UCSB were able to score three more runs in the top of the second inning. Gauchos lead the Spartans 5-2 going into the bottom of the third.

Graham led off the bottom of the third inning with a double, but the Spartans weren’t able to tally any runs.

SJSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but by the top of the seventh inning, the game quickly grew out of hand. The Gauchos pushed across two more runs in the top of the seventh, shutting the door on any comeback hopes for the Spartans.

The Spartans end the weekend with a 4-1 record during the SVC Classic.

Catch the next SJSU softball game March 3 against Cal State Fullerton. This will be the first of five games over the weekend in Fullerton, California.
