The Aztecs flipped a switch right after Cooks’ touchdown, starting with a 95-yard kick return touchdown from fifth-year running back Jordan Byrd.

Mayden finished with 268 yards through the air, 61 on the ground and is now 4-1 since taking over as a starting quarterback after beginning the season at safety.

The Spartans defense gave up season-high 43 points despite coming in as a top-10 scoring defense in the nation, allowing 16.4 points per game.

Third-year tight end Skylar Loving-Black ended SDSU’s 38 unanswered points with a 32-yard touchdown from Cordeiro, who finished with 195 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and an interception. It ended a streak of five straight drives that ended in a punt for SJSU.
