The Spartans returned to the Bay Area after a trip to Illinois for the Illini Women’s Invitational and they played well all weekend in Stanford.

Graduate student Antonia Malate, who finished the weekend tied for second individually at 6-under 207, tied for most birdies made for the field in the first round. She carried that momentum into the next two days.

Sophomore Lucia Lopez Ortega shot a clean card in the first round with four birdies and 14 pars. Senior Kajsa Arwefjäll made the team’s first eagle of the season on the 477-yard 12th hole.

On day two, SJSU women’s golf shot a 1-over 285 and was the only team other than Stanford to finish the second day under par. Arwefjäll, Lopez Ortega, and Malate all sat in the top 15 individually following day two.

Arwefjäll and Lopez Ortega tied for ninth place at 3-under 210.

In the final round, Ortega shot a 2-under 69 and Arwefjäll shot a 1-under 70. Malate had five birdies and 10 pars in the final round.

SJSU women’s golf was the only team to have three golfers finish in the top 15. The team shot a combined 847 over the weekend, 10 strokes behind first-place Stanford.

Iowa finished the second round four shots behind SJSU, but it narrowed the deficit and tied the Spartans for second place.

SJSU women’s golf is traveling to Wilmington, North Carolina, where it will play in the Landfall Tradition on Friday.
