San Jose State women’s soccer (6-5-5, 5-3-2 MW) lost in the dying minutes of the match on the road to Wyoming (6-6-5, 5-3-2 MW) on Sunday 2-1.
It was a strong start for the Spartans who kept applying solid pressure against the Cowgirls. Just like in their previous match against Colorado, the chances to score kept popping up.
Three minutes into the match, SJSU senior midfielder Kiana Miyazato managed to find the back of the net to get the blue-and-gold on the board first.
It is the kind of start that every team would want to kick off with and freshman goalkeeper Bente Pernot helped keep the great start going.
Off a shot right from inside of the box, Pernot dove to her left and made a beautiful stop right at the end of the half.
Wyoming would wake up toward the end of the half and start to create some chances to score. By the end of the first half, Wyoming had outshot SJSU women’s soccer 9-6.
The momentum carried over from the first half for the Cowgirls as their shots continued to bombard Pernot.
Wyoming sophomore forward Maddi Chance scored early in the second half to tie the game up 1-1. It was a tough play for Pernot who came out to play the ball but ended up missing it and Chance tapped it into the net.
In the final minutes of the match, Pernot came out to cover the ball but mishandled it. Wyoming fifth-year midfielder Jamie Tatum managed to score off of the error to put the Cowgirls on top 2-1.
The late goal snapped the Spartans win streak.
“Yea really, really tough loss today for our group. Despite that loss, we ended up playing a man down in the first half and really grinded as a team,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada.
SJSU women’s soccer will look to rebound against Fresno State at home on Thursday at 7 p.m.
