San Jose State men’s soccer (3-3-2, 0-0-0 WAC) tied with Houston Christian (4-3-3, 0-0-0 WAC) 1-1 on Friday night in San Jose.

The Spartans started the game on the attack, with two shot attempts and scored a goal within the first 15 minutes of the game. SJSU sophomore midfielder Beau Leroux scored in the bottom right of the goal, giving the Spartans an early lead.

The Huskies had some trouble with back-to-back fouls, which led to an injury to graduate student midfielder Finlay Wood who was subbed out.

However, the injury did not affect SJSU’s momentum in the first half. The Spartans ended the half with six shots on goal while the Huskies managed to get just three shots.

Once the second half began, the Huskies came out with a bang by scoring a goal six minutes into the half. Houston Christian junior forward Abu Kamara scored the goal, silencing the SJSU crowd.

“I think we had a chance to put them away at 2-0 but once that second goal didn’t come. They were always dangerous to get a goal,” head coach Simon Tobin said.

With the game tied, both teams were playing aggressive to score the winning goal. The Huskies almost had their chance for a second goal but were stymied by senior goalkeeper David Sweeney.

With that final save, the game ended in a draw leaving both teams disappointed in not getting the win.

“We wanna win our home games… three points is better than one,” said Tobin.

SJSU is now 6-4-3 against Houston Christian all-time.

The Spartans will play again at home on Sunday against Texas Rio Grande Valley at 12:30 p.m.
