The San Jose State men’s cross country team at the Pacific Invitational finished 5th overall in the competition while the women finished 11th overall. The meet took place at the Micke Grove Golf Course in Lodi, Calif., hosted by University of the Pacific.

A total of 11 schools competed in the invitational this Friday, many from the Mountain West.

Overall finishers for cross country

The top finisher for the men’s race was Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, submitting a score of 21 and a total time of 2:04:30.90. In the women’s race, St. Mary’s-Cal finished first with a score of 45 and a total time of 1:51:18.10.

Cal Poly’s top finisher for the men’s 8k was junior John Bennet who finished with a time of 24:21.9. The women’s top finisher was junior Rayna Stanziano who had a time of 21:36.4.

For the SJSU cross country men’s team, their top finisher was junior Amelio Chio with a time of 27:20.5. The women’s top finisher was freshman Constance O’Neal with a time of 23:49.8. Despite the solid times it would not be enough to propel them up the ranking against the other schools.

The Spartans on the women’s team had four other top 100 finishes while the men’s team had six others finish in the top 80. The effort was better than last invitational and got the notice of coach Charmaine Darden who spoke on this.

Coach Charmaine Darden commented after the game, “Pleased with today’s results we had a good effort from both the men’s and women’s side. The men we had several PR’s definitely the fastest we’ve run all year.”

The next competition for the SJSU cross country teams will be on October 7 at 3:30 p.m. at San Francisco State University.
